FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Playing in colder than usual temperatures, The No. 24 Nova Southeastern tennis team (2-0) defeated St. Thomas (0-3), 7-2, on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the NSU Tennis Center.
“It was a good win for us today,” head coach
Michael Coleman said. “Our doubles play really helped us secure the first three points and put us in a good position at the beginning of singles play.”
In doubles play, NSU swept St. Thomas in all three matches, outscoring the Bobcats 24-6. Senior
Dominique Wimmer (Gunstramdorf, Austria) and No. 44
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) defeated Gabriella Bongiovann and Emilia Vuorela in the No. 1 spot, 8-3. The next two points came from the undefeated doubles’ teams of
Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina)/
Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia), and
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.)/
Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada).
In singles action, Coleman went back to his traditional roster, having Wimmer and Johannson play in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively. Wimmer fell (1-6, 2-6) to Bongiovann, while Johannson double-bagled (6-0, 6-0) her opponent, Vuorela.
Cote, playing in the No. 3 spot, defeated Ydsia Quintero (6-2, 6-4). Burobina also recorded a victory playing in the No. 5 spot against Ashley Ahern (6-2, 6-2). Making her Sharks singles debut was freshman
Bianca Roberts (Ft. Walden Beach, Fla.). She defeated Lauren Lightfoot (6-4, 6-1) playing in the No. 6 spot. Lavallii fell to Manuela Gil in the No. 4 spot in a tiebreaker (5-7; 6-3; 7,10). The Sharks improved their record to a perfect 5-0 against the Bobcats.
Next weekend, the Sharks begin conference play, hosting the Tampa Saturday, Feb. 18, and Saint Leo Sunday, Feb. 19 at the NSU Tennis Center.
